how to use a manual shaver correctly

Oct 15, 2025

Manual shavers are mainly categorized into two types: straight razors and cartridge razors.

Regardless of the type, mastering the correct method is crucial to ensure optimal shaving results. Many people may believe that manual shavers are simple to use, requiring only a swipe over the beard. However, many people are often misled by this misconception.

Here's a detailed explanation of how to use a manual shaver correctly:
1. When shaving, first wet your face and beard thoroughly with warm water, then apply a layer of shaving cream, foam or gel. This softens the beard hair and creates a smooth glide to reduce skin irritation. Gently place the shaver blade close to your face at a 30-45 degree angle, moving it against the direction of beard growth for a closer shave. Shaving with the grain will be gentler but less thorough, while shaving against the grain requires a lighter hand to avoid cuts. It is recommended to shave every 1–2 days, as longer beard hair is more likely to cause tugging and discomfort.

2. If your beard is long, trim it to an appropriate length with scissors or clippers before shaving with a manual shaver. If scissors or clippers are unavailable, shave in sections, first using light strokes to trim down the bulk of the beard, then proceed with the above method for a closer finish.

3. When using a manual shaver, maintain a consistent angle throughout the shave and avoid pressing the blade too hard against your skin-let the sharpness of the blade do the work. This ensures a thorough shave while minimizing the risk of nicks and razor burn.

4. If the blade tugs at your beard or feels dull during shaving, stop immediately and replace the blade. A dull blade will not only cause an ineffective shave but also irritate or damage the skin.

5. The blades of a manual shaver are very thin and fragile, so avoid dropping the shaver or bumping the blade against hard surfaces to prevent chipping or deformation. Do not use the shaver on irritated, sunburned or broken skin.

6. For cartridge razors, rinse the cartridge thoroughly after each use to remove hair and residue. Store the shaver in a dry, well-ventilated place to prevent the blade from rusting. For straight razors, clean the blade with warm water after use, then dry it completely with a soft cloth and apply a small amount of blade oil to prevent corrosion.

7. To maintain the sharpness and life of the blades, replace cartridge razor heads every 5–7 uses, or sooner if you notice tugging or dullness. For straight razors, regularly hone and strop the blade to keep its edge sharp; this should be done every few shaves depending on usage frequency. Avoid using dull blades, as they are the primary cause of shaving discomfort.

8. After each use, rinse the blade under running water to remove any remaining hair, shaving cream and skin cells. For a deeper clean, use a small brush to scrub between the cartridge blades, then pat dry to maintain a clean, effective shaving experience.

Mastering the correct usage instructions above will not only maximize the performance of your manual shaver, but also ensure a more comfortable and smooth shaving experience.
